There’s nothing quite like the taste of fresh herbs in your food and after years of spending money in supermarkets buying them fresh, Sarah and I thought it would be fun to grow our own.

With that we headed down to Homebase and bought a flat pack herb planter and tin of Cuprinol Seagrass paint. 3 hours of construction and painting later, the final result was pretty good!

Once the paint had dried out I stapled in a black membrane to retain the moisture which was also bought from Homebase and trimmed off the excess about 2″ below the top of the planter.

The planter once built was a lot larger than I had expected so it took a good 3 bags of compost to fill it to the level shown below. In hindsight I should have dropped a 4th bag in but it didn’t really matter.

Sarah took it upon herself to plant the herbs which we’d bought down the left hand side of the planter:

  • Garlic Chives
  • Parsley
  • Coriander
  • Thyme
  • Oregano
  • Basil

On the right hand side of the planter we bought some strawberry plants as a bit of treat so those went in too with some netting to cover them, protecting them from the birds as they ripen.

We also bought ourselves a tomato plant so time will tell how we get on with it all and if anything will grow!
