England v Australia

Last weekend (29th November) the mighty England took on Australia at Twickenham as part of the QBE Internationals and what better way to watch the game than from a corporate box on the halfway line coupled with a full hospitality package of a hot Indian buffet, free flowing beer and referee linked earpiece to listen to all of the action! You can only imagine my excitement for the game when the tickets arrived on my desk at work…

This was an extra special event for me as,

  1. I’d never been to a rugby game before
  2. I’d never been to Twickenham before
  3. I’d certainly never had corporate hospitality before!

Living in Milton Keynes it was a bit of a mission to get down to Twickenham for the game having to head into Euston, across London to Vauxhall and then back out to Twickenham from there. This was made worse by the fact that unfortunately someone threw themselves under a train at Watford just as I arrived at MK station so the train was delayed by an hour. This delay meant that it took over 2 and half hours to get to Twickenham and really annoyingly I missed kick off by 10 minutes!! Bah.

However despite the late arrival the build up was fantastic as approaching the stadium was exhilarating – the roar of the stadium from the outside was incredibly loud as the game kicked off adding an extra pace to my step to get through the turnstiles quicker!

Once at the turnstile I was met by a very nice guy from the company who invited me along for the day who took us up in a lift to the corporate suite and boxes where due my late arrival everyone was already pretty boozed up(!)

I quickly grabbed a beer from the very lovely girls who were our hosts for the afternoon and made my way out onto the balcony where the noise was phenomenal. What an atmosphere!

England v Australia

Having watched England play rugby on TV my whole life it was amazing to finally make it to an international game and what a way to do it.

I’ve got to be honest, with the beer flowing and the fantastic company that I was in I only saw about 20 minutes of the 2nd half but it really didn’t matter to me as I was there to enjoy the full hospitality experience and not just the rugby!

England played a fantastic game of rugby eventually winning 26-17 and I had one of the best experiences of the year that I won’t forget in a hurry. I’ll be heading back to Twickenham to see England play again for sure and if I’m lucky enough to be offered the same hospitality treatment again I’ll be biting their hand off for it!
