Eggs Benedict with Ham at Mannion & Co. Cafe, York

During my recent weekend break in York I made the most of the food and drink that the city had to offer, particularly with regard to the independent cafes to ensure local businesses were supported.

The first place that I visited was Mannion & Co. on Blake Street for breakfast as they claimed to offer a “unique and unrivalled eating experience”. Anyone making such a bold statement really does need to do something extra special to impress.

Their website provides a little background into the cafe offering an interesting back story into where the business has grown from:

The Mannion family first opened this premises as a traditional green grocers’ over 30 years ago, and over time has restored the Tudor frontage that is visible from the back courtyard. The building now is home to the hugely popular and successful Mannion & Co Kitchen. Centrally located in the historic and atmospheric streets of the City of York, a warm welcome and memorable culinary experience is guaranteed.

Arriving into the cafe at around 10:45am it was quite busy however we were greeted with a warm smile and shown to the only table available, right next to the kitchen which sits as an open plan space within the room. This was actually a really good location as it was away from the door where people were coming in and out off the street to order from the deli counter at the front. Additionally I always love to watch the chefs preparing food and seeing how enthusiastic they are about the presentation as it’s placed on the hot plate.

Our waitress came over and took our order and in no time at all the food and drinks arrived. I opted for the eggs benedict with ham on a doorstop sized cut of fresh bread. It was delicious!

To accompany my breakfast I ordered a pot of Yorkshire breakfast tea (when in Rome!) and the tea pot and tiny milk urn that turned up were fantastic! It’s always nice to see something different and certainly a bit of quirkiness!

As we only stopped in for breakfast it was a bit of a flying visit. It was however a very enjoyable experience and came in at a reasonable price which is always good, especially as well placed cafes can tend to inflate the prices a little. The atmosphere was also great and I loved the finish with the pastel shades and wooden finishes.

Going back to their website’s claim to offer a “unique and unrivalled eating experience”, well, I’m not too sure about that to be honest! It was nicely prepared food in a nice environment but there were certainly other cafes we visited which had a similar charm about them.

Nonetheless I really enjoyed my breakfast at Mannion & Co. and would certainly recommend you stop in for a bite to eat on your next trip to York! 7/10.
