I recently moved in to a new, new build house and with that comes all of the fun of decorating to make the house feel more homely and eradicate the builders’ rather plain and boring magnolia walls.

The first decorating job in my house was to sort out the master bedroom and after the painting was complete I decided to treat myself to a new 43” 4K UHD LG TV to add some top technology to the space. Not only that but I opted to wall mount the TV to leave all of the room surfaces clear and have the best viewing experience from the bed.

Having never wall mounted a TV before I was hoping this would be a straightforward job that anyone like myself could achieve in an hour or 2. In the end it was a pretty simple installation.

Products required to complete the installation

1. Unbox your equipment and familiarise yourself with each component

A step that I often find missing from how to guides is this basic first step of getting familiar with everything that you need for an installation. This means getting everything laid out in such a way that you can see exactly what you are going to be working with – no surprises or bolts left over at the end.

Additionally you want to get out that instruction manual and look through each step. There’s plenty of other installations I’ve done over the years where I’ve either ignored the instructions and got things wrong or not read through the instructions in advance which would have allowed me to foresee a later issue.

So here is the space where I am installing the wall mounted TV in my master bedroom, replacing the very small and old TV that currently resides in the corner of the room.

2. Locate the 4 wall mounting bracket screw holes on your TV

The first stage of getting the TV on the wall is to assess the rear of the TV to establish what size fixings will be required to attached the brackets to it. These fixings come in a couple of different sizes and most wall mounting brackets will come with a selection of the most common sizes in the box.

On the back of your TV you need to look for the 4 screw holes which are arranged as a square as these will be your fixing points.

3. Determine whether you need spacers and if so, the depth required

With your screw holes and sizes identified the next stage is to establish whether or not you are going to need spacers between the back of your TV and the tiltable mounting brackets.

If your TV is curved on the back or has any recessed parts where the brackets need mounting to the 4 screw holes you’re going to need spacers. This will ensure your brackets sit flush to the back of the TV for maximum strength and to ensure it can take the load of the TV.

My LG TV is curved on the back so I needed to identify the correct spacer size for my installation.

The AVF wall bracket I bought came with several spacers supplied as many of the wall mounting kits do, so it was simply a case of checking and matching up the right spacer size.

With the spacers in place this how things looked from the side showing that the curvature of the TV was flattened out to accommodate the bracket.

4. Attach the TV Wall Mount Brackets to your TV

The next step was to attach the brackets to the back of the TV. To do this I unscrewed 2 screws on the sides of the bracket which allowed the tilt mechanism to fully open. This gave full access to the screw holes that were otherwise very difficult to access.

As you can see in the photo the screws at the top of the TV (left hand side) can be located in several positions in the bracket. When deciding which screw holes to use you need to ensure that the bracket remains hidden from view and is also low enough that when you mount the TV on the wall the tilt of the TV doesn’t lead to the bottom of the TV hitting the wall.

The way that you can establish this is to open the bracket up in to its full tilt position as shown below. If you follow the angle of the bracket from the top left of the photo to the bottom right of the photo, that line should not continue down the bottom right and touch the bottom of the TV. If as per my photo here the line can continue beyond the TV you will be fine when finally mounted on the wall.

With the first bracket attached it was then simply a case of repeating the above process and attaching the second bracket.

5. Attach the TV Wall Mount Bracket’s Wall Bar to your wall

The next step in the installation was to attach the wall mounting bracket to the wall. My AVF kit came with a cardboard template which outlined where the drill holes need to be located. Not only that but the template was linked to their app which calculated the correct height for the bracket relative to where the top of the TV would be located on the wall which was great to achieve the perfect and intended height.

Without the app/AVF system you would firstly need to measure the distance from the floor to the top of the TV (based on where you want the TV located on the wall). Secondly you need to deduct from that measurement the distance between the top of your TV and where the bracket holes will sit when the bracket is attached to the back of your TV.

With the measurements all made, drill your holes, ideally in to a wooden stud in the wall if you can locate one for extra strength.

Use a spirit level to ensure your bracket is going to be mounted to the wall level.

With the mounting bracket securely fastened to the wall all of the hard work is over! All that is left to do is attach the TV to the wall.

6. Attach the TV Wall Mount Brackets to the Wall Bar

Firstly open up the tilting brackets that are now attached to the back of your TV.

It’s then simply a case of clipping the mounting points (shown in silver above) to the wall rail. Your TV will then be securely attached to the wall.

With the AVF kit there are several straps included that help with adjusting and dismounting the TV so if you have something similar they just need to be tucked out of sight.

7. Adjust your TV to the desired viewing angle

Finally, sit yourself in your viewing position and adjust the tilt of the TV to the desired angle for the best viewing experience.

8. Sit back and enjoy watching your new wall mounted TV!

With everything mounted on the wall you can stand back and admire a job well done! You now have a wall mounted TV securely faster to your wall!

As you can see from my photo here, by having a wall mounted TV you expose the black wires which in this instance is the power lead and HDMI lead to my SkyQ box. It’s not a great looking finish so I would recommend buying some trunking to enable you to tuck those wires away and hide them from view. This is a far cheaper option than attempting to run hidden wires through the wall requiring plastering and redecoration.
